SALT LAKE CITY (ABC 4 News) - An unlikely supporter is in agreement with the new Salt Lake City ordinance to not discriminate on the base of sexual orientation.

Senator Chris Buttars announced Wednesday he supported the new policy.

The support is unlikely because Buttars sponsored the state's constitutional amendment on marriage, and is also against gay marriage.

However, he says he supports this bill because it protects people from discrimination in their employment and housing.

Tuesday, Mayor Ralph Becker signed the bill into law.

To denn034 - Have you not noticed that Sugar House & the Avenues were becoming dives, and that when the homosexuals moved in, they BOTH became highly desired places to live after each area was renovated an cleaned up? Please cite factual data linking homosexuals with a corresponding increase in crime? As for the mormon church involvement, if they get involved in politics, they face the possibility of losing their tax-free status. Then your tithing would have to go up!

Let me also add my disappointment in the moral cowardice of the Mormon church on this point as well. Shame on the Mormon church!

I've reconsidered my support for the new non-discrimination ordinance. Those ordinances can only lead to homosexuals coming out of the closet and thereby undermine the morality of our society with the corresponding increase in crime. A moral society is a less crime ridden society, so I cannot in good conscience support ordinances that undermine that morality!
