SALT LAKE CITY (ABC 4 News) - Attorneys and workers for a Utah law firm and a property management company were indicted over allegations of conspiracy to commit visa fraud.
U. S. Prosecutor Brett Tolman announced the indictments at a press conference on Tuesday.
Several people, most of whom either work for or are otherwise associated with the Alcala Law firm were indicted in what Tolman characterized as the biggest immigration fraud conspiracy in Utah's history. A property management company was also named in the indictment, along with several attorneys and legal workers.
The indictment charges that the defendants obtained more than 5,000 fraudulent non-agricultural work visas on behalf of several Utah businesses, mostly associated with construction and property management, who employed workers who were in the U.S. illegally.
The indictment also alleges that the defendants encouraged and induce illegal aliens to enter and stay in the country.
Several federal agencies were involved in the investigation, including ICE, U.S. Department of State Diplomatic Security Service, Homeland Security Citizenship and Inspection Service, the U.S. Department of Labor and the U.S. Attorney’s Office.
