GRANTSVILLE, Utah (ABC 4 News) - Grasshoppers infested a Grantsville backyard last Wednesday.

Homeowner Karla Baum said the grasshoppers destroyed her garden, and were thick enough to coat her entire screen door.

Baum said, however, that her prayers were answered when a flock of seagulls landed and ate the insects in the backyard.

She accredited her LDS faith and mentioned her ancestors' experiences in which seagulls came to eat grasshoppers and saved crops in Utah back in 1848.

The Utah Department of Agriculture and Food said that this happens naturally from time to time.

It depends on your definition of a miracle. Miracles happen in people's lives everyday. Not every miracle has to be of the "everybody saw it and was amazed" variety. One night at 2am, 25 years ago in Braintree MA, I sat in my car and watched another driver go through the intersection on my green light. I had a "feeling" that I should stay put. After the car passed by I continued my journey. I felt like something extraordinary had happened and that I had avoided great harm or even death. But I wasn't in the news. There were no other vehicles or people there to see what happened. Drivers probably run that red light with some regularity. Maybe others have sat through the green light as I did. So the bugs and the birds are native to the area. They come with regularity. Science can explain it all, that's wonderful. The miracle is in the eye of the beholder. The fact that science can explain why it happened does not negate the fact that a miracle occurred for that person. The lady felt that something extraordinary happened in her life. She felt that the birds coming when they did somehow altered the outcome of the event. What she believes or doesn't believe is not what is important. If you have had such a moment in your own life, you are so much the richer for it. If you have not had a personal miracle, well, maybe you are so wonderful you don't need one. Or maybe you need one that much more. There are two forces at work in the world. One builds up, strengthens and uplifts. The other tears down, divides and derides. Why not be a builder?

Maybe it's a miracle that god sent scientists to explain to us why the grasshoppers and seagulls show up every now and then... In order to prevent us from getting blackmailed of sorts by "spiritual" leaders into buying and/or earning our salvation from natural phenomena: of whose origins they no nothing about. Education and real truth are the real keys to freedom. And they are not secret. They are all around us; but invisible to the one who holds tight to an ideal because of fear, ignorance, obligation, or assigned "duty." When ignorance and fear cause people to hold to trained and damaging beliefs, it eventually rips families apart (if you're not with us you're against us) and inspires generations of psychological/mental sickness. The saddest part is that the people who are sick have no idea; and attempt with fervor to pass the disease to all those around them. And accuse of wickedness and godlessness to any and all who refuse. My best wishes to all those out there who are in the life-long path of recovery from instilled fears; and subtly implanted irrational, progress-hindering beliefs.

Grasshoppers invaded her backyard and coated her screen door? Sounds like one of The Seven Plagues of Egypt. Perhaps you folks are reading this event all wrong...perhaps the grasshopper invasion itself is the 'miracle' (albeit a negative one)...perhaps 'Heavenly Father' is trying to tell you something. Perhaps the lightning strike to Moroni perched on your newest Masonic Temple was a heads up. Just a thought.

The state bird came and ate all the crickets and grasshoppers because the state bird lives here in great numbers and regularly consumes crickets and grasshoppers. Miracle? Hardly.
