PAYSON Utah (ABC4 News) - Authorities are sorting through many leads but have yet to make any arrests in a Payson murder.
Monday night Kay Mortensen was killed during a home invasion murder. His son and daughter-in-law were also in the home but were found tied up.
Utah County sheriff investigators said their are narrowing down the possibilities but won't divulge details.
Meanwhile friends and neighbors said Mortensen loved his guns but the former BYU professor could be engaging.
"I really enjoyed Kay," said long time neighbor Kent Carroll. "He was a different character though."
Carroll lives next door and has known the Mortensen's for 28-years. Monday night just before the murder he spoke with Mortensen's wife by phone.
"They were planning on playing board games as a family that night," he said.
He said Mortensen's son and daughter-in-law were already in the home when two suspects barged in. He's not sure why it happened but he said Mortensen is one who never leaves his guard down.
"He let his guard down in that instant and lost control of the situation and from there it's history," Carroll said.
Carroll said Mortensen's son and daughter-in-law were found tied up. But he said Kay Mortensen's wife lucked out because she was running late.
"Probably her being delayed saved her from being involved," he said.
