HERRIMAN, Utah (ABC 4 News) - It was a fireworks show, but not the kind some people in Herriman wanted. Some mailboxes in both in West Jordan and Herriman are a mess. They were blown up overnight and police think it's teenagers to blame for the vandalism.
It was a rude awakening for Glade Best. He says around one o'clock Friday morning he heard a loud bang. He ran out of his house to see what was happening and saw a couple of kids running away from his mailbox. That's when he saw his mailbox blown to pieces.
He spent Friday looking around his yard and street for the scraps. He found parts of the box clear across the street. Best says several mailboxes were hit.
No one was hurt he understands how dangerous this vandalism can be. Best says, “When you talk about M-80s you never know what direction this stuff is going to go.” He adds, “I’m mad just to the point that you have to fix it. It takes a lot of time to dig them out and get new ones built, that part of it is tough with vandalism.”
Since mailboxes are federal property, any damage to one is a federal offense. The penalty can be up to a $250,000 fine or three years in prison.
