Letter that accompanied list of supposed illegal immigrants in Utah.
Letter that accompanied list of supposed illegal immigrants in Utah.
SALT LAKE CITY (ABC 4 News) - A mailing claims to expose more 1,300 people living in Utah as illegal immigrants and demands their deportation. The list was sent anonymously to politicians, law enforcement and the news media. It not only contains names, but also birthdays, addresses, phone numbers and in a few cases, social security numbers.

The list includes both adults and children and even notes that a handful of women are pregnant. The letter that accompanied the list comments, "some of the women on the list are pregnant at this time and steps should be taken for immediate deportation."

The letter is from a group that calls itself "Concerned Citizens of the United States" but has no return address and no contact information. In fact, there is nothing in the letter or on the envelope that would further identify who is behind CCUS.

The letter begins, "We are enclosing a list of individuals who we strongly believe are in this county illegally." But it does not say why the group believes they are here illegally. Tony Yapias, a voice of the Latino community who also served under Governors Leavitt and Walker, told ABC 4 News, "Molina, Rodriguez, Lauro, Ramirez, Villanueva, Lopez, Bernal. That's racial profiling. What did they do? They went by the surnames."

Salt Lake County Sheriff Jim Winder was one of those who received the list. He said other than the Hispanic surnames, he also found nothing in the list that comes close to substantiating the claim. ""These are individuals who have no ability to defend themselves from the accusation," said Sheriff Winder. "We live in a country of laws. I, for one, would not want to be branded with something without some sort of due process and that is what this seems to be."

A spokeswoman for Salt Lake City Police Chief Chris Burbank confirms that the list also showed up Monday in his mail box. But she said Chief Burbank was out of town this week and would not be available to comment.

The letter was originally sent to "Customs and Immigration" on April 4, 2010. A spokeswoman for Immigration and Customs Enforcement, a part of the US Department of Homeland Security, confirmed receipt of the list "a couple months back" but would not say if ICE had taken any action on it. Other law enforcement sources tell ABC 4 News that at most, ICE agents would check the list against existing "wants and warrants" and follow up only if they found a match.

Such a response may not have been good enough for CCUS which has now sent the list to a wider group of Utah officials as well as newspaper, radio and television stations.

Yapias said the group may claim to be non-violent, but he doesn't believe it. "To me, they're terrorists," He said. "They have just terrorized 12-hundred families."

Yapias believes the detailed information could only have come from a confidential government database. "It seems to me that it's from someone in state government that has access to all types of information."

Sheriff Winder said he will have his investigators look into that allegation. If the information did come from a government database, it may well have violated state privacy laws.

"These folks, I'm sure, are defenders of the constitution. We all are defenders of the constitution," explained Sheriff Winder. "The constitution says innocent until proven guilty."

ABC 4 extends an invitation to whoever is behind the list to come out of hiding and to explain the origin of the list.

For the ignorant MaryInCedar about one of your idiot comments: "I like that some other people are pointing out the fact that there are SS#'s on the list.. Hmm illegals cant have ss#'s .. I bet if they looked them up they would be illegally obtained !!" For your information the Utah government used to give SS# to illegal immigrants when they would get their driver's license. They just changed that about 3 years ago. And guess what not only Mexicans are illegal in this country, there are even people from Europe. And guess what else, the constitution is not only for US citizens. I'll bet your ancestors were illegal immigrants from Europe, am I right? Should I keep going... go read some books, learn more about history, get off your bubble before sharing your stupid comments.

I just became aware of "the list" a couple minutes ago. I'm a young Hispanic adult who is leaving a word out for my kind. When looking in this matter you have to understand the situation. I realize that it is wrong for them to cross the boarder illegally. But like i mentioned earlier you won't ever understand what they have gone across. They truly know what is hell. And no one will ever take that under consideration. I'm 17 and i already understand, where is the compassion? It seems like i'm acting far mature than others in this so called free country. This letter is ridiculous. And to those who say that Hispanics don't pay taxes? You are clearly mistaken. Because my parents do pay taxes so we have a privilege to stay here. And who are those to judge for this matter? It's preposterous. This very country once held a valid point that made everyone want to be free. Under the statue of liberty holds a plaque, "Give me your tired, your poor, Your huddled masses yearning to breathe free, The wretched refuse of your teeming shore. Send these, the homeless, tempest-tost to me, I lift my lamp beside the golden door!". That is still there. So why didn't they remove it? Our forefathers believed it so why can't we? We are not the new age if we cannot accept those people? I believe we should discover a new way to help this situation. To follow and understand where these people come from? Like my history teacher once taught my class saying, "that if you don't become education of ones culture prejudice begins, and once you being that prejudice it turns to discrimination, and once you act on that discrimination it becomes racism." The youth wants peace. So let it be. Find the solution. I'm a little piece of that youth and i want to help. And i will always be ready. Will you?

Seriously, who gives a damn if they are here illegally unless they are criminals? What about the ones who are here for a better life, to save their own lives and their children's? To get away from the suffer of rape, beatings, murders, hunger? Us as Americans should want to help these people instead of trying to deport them back to their horrible countries. If we are such better people, wouldn't we help? What if something happened to you here in the USA and you didn't find help anywhere so you decide to go to another country to help yourself? Should the natives hunt you down and try forcing you out of their countries? How would you like that? How would you like to be treated as dirty rats? Because that's what most of us Americans do; We hate these poor people. And for what? I just don't understand what harm they are doing. They are human beings just like you reading this. People, grow up and learn to love and not hate.

"MaryInCedar": You obviously don't believe in "following the law". You also have zero understanding of the Constituion, and you still have absolutely no proof that any individual on that list is "illegal". In fact, if only *one* individual on that list were a legal citizen, their right to privacy (which is protected by the Constitution) has been violated, which is (you guessed it) against the law. Something tells me that if your name & SSN were to appear on any list being made public that your misguided and ignorant xenophobic rant would come to a screeching halt.

thats ODD chad.. I also believe in ... FOLLOWING THE LAW.. which CLEARLY these people DON'T!! AND UPHOLDING THE LAW .. which CLEARLY the Authorities are NOT!! .. holding them to accountability is NOT WRONG at ALL!! they need to do the job MY TAXES pay for!! clearly its not the illegal aliens' taxes paying for them!! And the CONSTITUTION is for the CITIZENS .. not for those who CONTINUOUSLY break the laws.. including IMMIGRATION laws!!

There is still no proof that anyone on this list is "illegal". Also, anyone ignorant enough to make the statement "we need a law just like in Arizona" has forgotten the principles that this country was founded on. if you don't like the Constitution and the rights it guarantees for all, please feel free to leave this country.
