LAYTON, Utah (AP) - Health officials say there are no longer traces of poisonous gas in a Layton home where a 4-year-old girl was fatally sickened over the weekend.
Investigators believe Rebecca Toone's death on Saturday is related to fumes that seeped into the house from pellets placed in the front yard to kill rodents. Her 15-month-old sister, Rachel, also fell ill and on Tuesday remained hospitalized in critical condition.
A Utah National Guard team found high levels of phosphine in the home on Sunday. The gas is produced when aluminum phosphide pellets like those placed in the yard on Friday get wet.
The home was ventilated Monday.
Davis County Health Department spokesman Bob Ballew says tests Tuesday showed no traces of the gas. The department has lifted its closure order on the house.
