LAYTON Utah (ABC4 News) – It’s called progress but it comes with a price.

As a result, a historical restaurant is shutting down its doors.

Doug and Emmys Restaurant has been a fixture in Layton for years.

But a new Interstate-15 interchange under construction has forced them out.

“It’s been an exciting time,” said Doug Madsen a co-owner. “We’ve met lots of wonderful people over the years.”

The restaurant which is located at 200 South Main is hard to miss.

It’s located inside an old railroad depot.

“Most know it as the old rail station,” Madsen said. “It used to be on Gentile Street and then it was moved here.”

The restaurant known for its big pancakes, big cinnamon rolls and big breakfast has attracted loyal customers over the years.

In fact Doug and Emmys brought Darren and Kimberly together.

The couple met at the Layton restaurant during their high school days.

The Scotts are now married with four children.

And those cinnamon rolls continue to bring them back.

"They love coming here eating the huge big cinnamon rolls, it's a good environment, everyone's nice," said Darren Scott.

His wife said the closure will make it difficult for them to find a new family restaurant. That’s because she said they’ve always come to Doug and Emmys.

"We've seen the city of Layton grow and have seen the mall come in,” said Kimberly Scott. “We've seen the changes here so this is one of the staples and we'll be sad to see it go.”

Not only will families miss out on those big cinnamon rolls but for a dozen or so workers they’ll miss out on a paycheck.

"I don't know yet,” said Keri Balli who cooks. “I guess I got to go look now.”

But Doug and Emmys plan one final hurrah.

They’re offering a free Thanksgiving meal to anyone who drops by Thursday.

"If there's anybody out there that doesn't have any place to go tomorrow afternoon or need a free meal, something to fill their bellies we're going to take care of them," said Madsen.

The restaurant is located at 200 South Main in Layton and will start serving at 2:30.
