SALT LAKE CITY, UT (ABC 4 NEWS)-Some members of Utah's gay and lesbian community are upset with comments made by a state senator.

Senate President Michael Waddoups released a statement saying "The Moratorium was born from a hope that the emerging civil, respectful, and educated dialogue on LGBT issues in Utah might continue. That seems healthy to me. The further hope is that through a year of thought and discussion we might find consensus on the direction we take as a state."

He went on to warn activists to avoid behavior that would polarize.

Gay rights activists took action by protesting lawmakers who agreed to a one year Moratorium on anti-gay rights bills but not in the usual manner.

Friday afternoon the State Capitol steps were filled with activists, sitting quietly covering their mouths symbolizing exactly how they feel; powerless and without a voice.
