SALT LAKE CITY (ABC 4 News) - For anyone who thinks a penny isn't worth anything these days, a group of young people prove that idea to be wrong.
Teenagers from the Salt Lake First Baptist Church delivered 101,786 pennies to the State Capitol on Sunday.
In delivering the pennies, the youth wanted the state to know that every one of them counts toward helping Utah's children living in poverty.
The youth group protested budget cuts that are eliminating services for Utah's disadvantaged kids needing healthcare, food, and education.
The Church's goal was to raise at least 94,000 pennies to represent the number of children living below the poverty line in Utah. They exceeded their goal by collecting over 100,000 pennies.
The Penny Project is part of the Children In Poverty Initiative endorsed by National Ministries American Baptist Churches, USA.
