SALT LAKE CITY, Utah (ABC 4) - Millions of people use propane lighters everyday unaware of the dangers. The lighters can explode and cause serious injuries.

Sherri McDaniel loves to grill. During the summer they BBQ three or four times a week. But, a few weeks ago Sherri got a big surprise. She said, "I heard a loud boom and I thought someone had shot my window.

It wasn't a gunshot it was an explosion. The sun had caused her extended grill lighter to explode sending lighter fragments everywhere.

South Salt Lake City Fire Chief Steve Foote has responded to several fires that have been caused by lighter explosions or malfunctions. Chief Foote says, "The lighers become heated, catch on fire, send debris flying and become projectiles like missles going through the air."

Luckily nobody was injured when Sherri's lighter exploded. She says it could have been much worse because her young grandchildren are over all the time playing in the area.

Here are a few tips to keep in mind:

*Also store lighters in a safe place
*Never leave them in direct sunlight
*Don't leave them next to the grill or a heat source
*Keep them away from children
*Don't keep them lit for more than 30 seconds
*If you have any questions or concerns don't hesitate to call your local fire station
