SALT LAKE CITY (ABC 4 News) - Did Utah Governor Jon Huntsman distance himself from the LDS Church in order to win the presidency?

Well, that's what a new, national magazine article claims.

The article is in the New Republic Magazine and may be one of the most revealing ever written about Utah's Governor.

Not only does it suggest Jon Huntsman may have been appointed China Ambassador for political reasons, but also that he has been distancing himself from the LDS Church in order to become president.

The article claims Huntsman learned several lessons from Mitt Romney’s failed presidential run.

Perhaps, the chief being that, "a Mormon, no matter how conservative, cannot win amongst the right wing of the party - particularly evangelicals."

The article also makes very clear that Huntsman wanted to run for president.

Given that, the New Republic piece continues, "Huntsman...actively worked to distance himself from the LDS Church in recent months."

Specifically, the article points to the governor's recent decision to support same sex civil unions.

Also, Huntsman's successful efforts to liberalize Utah's liquor laws.

And, finally, his decision to endorse John McCain and not fellow Mormon Romney.

But according to the article, Huntsman concluded he was too moderate to win the nomination of his still quite conservative Republican Party.

So, he gave up his 2012 presidential bid.

And when asked if political motivations were behind Jon Huntsman's appointment as Ambassador to China, a state department source is quoted as saying, "everybody here thinks so."

Governor’s Huntsman’s office had no comment on The New Republic article.

he's smart to distance himself, because no mormon would ever be elected by the evangelical right wing of what's left of the republican party. but is a hypocrite like all other mormons for doing so anyway. if you religion is so "scared" and "true", surely politics or what people think of your religion wouldn't get in the way. unless you're a hypocrite of course.

I like the guy....distancing himself from the LDS Church...wise move...he is redeemed! 44mag357mag....I am ashamed to have people know that you are an American. I'm ashamed to have the Chinese people know that you are an American BIGOT. BTW....bigotry is IMMORAL.....hypocrite.

I am glad Huntsman is gone. I am ashamed to have people know he is from Utah. However, a politician, he is. No honesty or integrity, always go with the flow and say what the democrat party tells you to say. Hopefully, Herbert will show some fortitude and a strong moral stance. Hopefully, China will choose to keep him there, among people who think like him.

They are reporting on an article that was printed in a national magazine...the reporter didn't just come up with it. Thus, not an editorial. Maybe better suited as a blog, but it's not just his opinion. Sheeh.

Miss Diana - You missed the point. This piece should have been labeled "editorial". They reported something as "news", without a single statement of fact. Watch the video and listen for something of substance other than "they said". You won't hear it. This "reporting" is the same as going to an underpass, listening to a transient, and quoting them as "news". I am a non-mormon and a Democrat and I am horribly offended. That should tell you how bad this was.

I don't see anything shameful here...the man was a politician, and a decent one at that. If he had let the church dictate his every move he would have been nothing but a puppet. I sure hope you people don't think he should only serve the mormon agenda- he was governor of the entire state, including the heathens. He didn't change the liquor laws for you people. What are you getting your garments in a bunch for?

Shameful - contrived -frothy fluff!!

This is shameful! Reporting an article from a nothing magazine in a "they said this" and "they said that" manner like it is evidence written in stone. How dare you call yourselves "journalists"? You should all hang your heads in shame.

This is a sleazy comment in an evidently sleazy publication. If anyone has read any of the local news through the past months they would know that Gov. Huntsman was in ACCORD with LDS ideas. They have publically said they would not be against CIVIL Unions {but not marriage}. Also, the church has been consulted on the new drinking laws and had no objections to the newest laws. I will miss our wonderful governor and know he has and will conduct himself with integrity wherever he is. He will not compromise his beliefs for political gain. By the way, I voted mostly Democrat, but Huntsman received my vote all the way.!!!!!
