SALT LAKE CITY, Utah ( ABC 4 News)- Salt Lake City police are trying to find out what prompted an off-duty Salt Lake County Sheriff's Deputy to shoot a man during a brawl.
It happened Saturday morning around 1:30 a.m. at the Green Street Social Club at 602 east 500 south. Salt Lake City Police Detective Dennis McGowan said,” It happened after or during a fight that occurred between some 10-15 persons at the nightclub. It's unknown what started the fight or what prompted or compelled the officer to draw his weapon.”
Salt Lake City police say the man who was shot, in his late 20's, was transported to a hospital along with another man who was injured in the brawl. Salt Lake City PD is investigating the cause of this shooting.
ABC 4 News talked to Renee Roberts who works at Green Street. She says she was working during the shooting. We asked her if the deputy responded with his gun after he saw a fight, or was he part of the fight. Roberts said,” We can't make any comment on what happened. It was very fast and quick, and SLCPD handled the situation very fast.”
McGowan says the deputy has been put on paid administrative leave pending the outcome of this investigation. We're told the deputy is a veteran member of the sheriff's office with more than 10 years of experience. The man who was shot by the deputy has injuries that are not considered life threatening. No one was arrested.
