SALT LAKE CITY (ABC 4 News) - Coveted space in the New York Times - the advertising pages. It is an expensive full page ad condemning the violence and intimidation directed recently at the LDS Church over its support of California's Prop 8 banning gay marriage.

It started with dozens of protests nationwide, some of which got violent. Then a white powder scare at temples in Salt Lake and Los Angeles. There’s even a new Jack Black video "Prop 8 – The Musical” mocking the LDS Church and their stance on Prop 8. There has been no shortage of negative attention on The Church, but Friday, we saw something positive. A full page ad in the New York Times backed by Jews, Catholics, and civil rights activists to name a few.

Part of the message says, "The violence and intimidation being directed against the LDS or "Mormon" Church, and other religious organizations - and even against individual believers - simply because they supported Proposition 8 is an outrage that must be stopped."

Local religious leaders from different faiths are supporting the ad. Rabbi Benny Zippel says violence masked as freedom of speech should never be tolerated, “We've come to a point of our history and of our lives that we have to stop using violence as a way to make our statements.”

Bishop John Wester with the Catholic Church says some of the acts towards the LDS Church jeopardize the rights of everyone, “Even the signatories say we disagree with each other on a lot of things but we do agree on this that we have to stand shoulder to shoulder with each other to protect our right to be able to express our opinion in the public square.”

The Church has called the ad a thoughtful and generous gesture and says in a statement, "We join with those of all religious faiths and political persuasions who have called for reasoned and civil discourse on matters that affect our nation."

EXACTLY my point. Every time any one attacks your church in any way you can claim that "It is a sign of the true church". It is "proof" to you that your convictions are true. I am sorry that there has been vandalism, I don't condone it. But would I be wrong to guess that no less than one person in that ward got up in Fast and Testimony meeting and said how their testimony in the church was strenghtened because of the persecution they have felt? It could have just been a thief, completely unrelated to any of this Prop 8 8 business...but they decide that it is satan working against them!!! They can have faith that man's puny arm will not stop the work of the Lord. Mormons are funny. Has it ever occured to you that the opposition to the church is just human nature to fight against an organization that, in this case, so publicly advertised it's bigotry? It's not satan trying to tear down the "Truth".

Miss Diana, So you are saying the LDS Church members are masochists??? I find it insulting you state: "LDS church LIKES to claim persecution, it makes them feel justified in their beliefs." My mother in law reported yesterday 2 cars were broken into at the church parking lot AND one car was stolen. I guarantee you those violated were not pleased. Mrmons don't like persecution. they were not the only religious group helping support Prop 8, we were singled out.... Satan doesn't like our church.... so he moves his followers to attack us. It is a sign of the true church.

johnp and Miss Diana - The LDS Church didn't even bring up the Prop 8 Musical, the reporter did. In fact, the Church hasn't "whined" about the backlash once. They knew it was coming, and all they did was thank others for taking a stand with them. Get your facts straight, please.

I was just about to say the same thing...the video is mocking religious people in general who voted for the Proposition. But the LDS church LIKES to claim persecution, it makes them feel justified in their beliefs.

If Annie had actually watched Prop 8 The musical, then she would know it wasn't an attack on them. Mormons weren't even properly represented. They should have included a couple missionaries in their skit, but they didn't. Good thing too. Can you imagine the whining if they had?
