LAYTON, Utah (ABC 4 News) - Who knows how many others have been sold. A mom asked ABC 4 to take action after she bought a comic book package she thought was for kids ended up having a nudity and violence inside.

“I seen the naked lady and I got mad.” Ten year old Sheldyn Conley loves comic books but knew something was wrong when he opened “The Spectre.” He says, “I just turned the page and I seen the naked ladies so I handed it to a grownup and said, ‘Look at this.’”

On the very first page are two large drawings of a naked woman. There’s more nudity throughout the comic as well as violence. Stepfather Kenny Stong says, “He's a little young to be exposed to that kind of situation or environment, what not.”

Linda Hurst bought the comics to put in an Easter basket. She didn't feel comfortable being on camera but said, “It really embarrassed me because I’d given it to a 10 year old boy.” She bought the comics from a Dollar Tree. Everything made her believe it was meant for children. She says they were placed in the kids isle of the store, the wrapping seemed "G" rated, and the back of the wrapper says, "All comic books inserted in the "Superhero Comic Book Spectacular" are family friendly and will bring hours of enjoyable reading.”

So who's responsible for the mix up? ABC 4 went to the Dollar Tree for answers. When we showed the comic book to manager Tiffany Miller, her reaction was, “Uhhh, oh my gosh.”

She explained that the comic book packages are promotional items sent to Dollar Tree because other retailers couldn't sell them. Minutes after we arrived she pulled them from the shelves and said she would, “…Call my district manager right now and let him know what's going on and let him know we should pull them off all the shelves in the other stores if they have them too.”

The other comic book in the package was fine. No nudity and a lot less violence. Another note, the comics included in the packages is a random selection of out of print comic books.

While I don't own the comic in question, that issue was published in 1987 in what was then marketed as DC's "New Format", which was limited to direct sales comic shops. Like the contemporaneous issues of "Swamp Thing" and "John Constantine: Hellblazer", it perhaps should have carried a "Suggested for Mature Readers" tag. From the cover, it looks like it was one of the titles of the time not submitted for Comics Code approval. Even with Code approval, a certain degree of nudity (implied or otherwise) was allowed. Portrayals of code approved nudity depended on such factors as "camera angles", strategic placement of hair and/or shadows, or obscuring whisps of smoke/steam/clouds or whatever. Your report fogs the nudity, so I can't judge how it compares to the Code-approved nudity in Wonder Woman #1 (1986) or certain Direct Sales NEW TEEN TITANS issues from 1984 and 1988, let alone the code-approved nudity of Jean Grey on the final pages of UNCANNY X-MEN #136 (1980). As God's agent on Earth, the character of the Spectre has been particularly grim and Old Testament in his meting out of Vengeance and Divine Retribution, particularly in the early-mid-seventies and beyond. Suffice it to say, the 1987 series probably isn't suited for most ten year olds and should not have ended up in such a package. However, Dollar Tree did not create that package, nor did DC Comics. The mother's ire should be directed toward the packager. This can also be used as a teachable moment in parental responsibility and the appropriate and inappropriate uses of sensuality in pictorial-narrative storytelling.

Also "isle" should be "aisle." And yes, I know I transposed two words in one of my sentences, but hey, I'm not being paid to write here.

Here are some basic writing corrections for Ms. Cutler: The first sentence is a question and should end with a question mark. The second sentence is missing a word to make grammatical sense. One way to fix it would be to put the word “that” between “kids” and “ended.” There should be two hyphens in “10 year old.” The phrase “ it was meant for children” should be “they were meant for children,” since the pronoun is referring to “comics.” There should be an apostrophe after “kids” since it is possessive in “kids isle.” "Superhero Comic Book Spectacular" should be in single quotation marks instead of double, since it appears within a quote that already has correct double quotation marks. The explanation “because other retailers couldn't sell them” does not make any sense or explain anything at all. It would be different if this were a direct quote, but to paraphrase the manager and leave it unexplained does not tell the reader anything. There should be a comma after “them” in “...if they have them too.” “No nudity and a lot less violence” is not a sentence. It could have been connected to the previous sentence with a comma and the word “with,” or some similar construction. The next sentence starts also off with a substandard construction: “Another note” should be followed by a colon instead of a comma. Also, the verb “is” should be “are” in order to agree with the subject of the sentence, “comics.” Finally, “out of print” should have two hyphens. On a less mechanical note, most journalism classes teach writers not to quote people in a way that makes them sound stupid. That would have been nice. I tried clicking on the link to the author's name, but received an error message.

Only in Utah does this "think of the children" BS qualify as "news".
