Microsoft says Utah jury wouldn't award damages

SALT LAKE CITY (AP) - Microsoft Corp. says the hung jury that came one vote short of finding the software giant violated antitrust law wasn't prepared to award a Utah company any damages.
The jury deadlocked 11-1 Friday on a single juror's refusal to declare that Microsoft caused the decline of the once-popular WordPerfect writing program.
Microsoft says it learned from the judge that five of the jurors wouldn't have awarded Novell Inc. any damages even if the full panel reached an antitrust finding.
Novell argued that Microsoft enticed it to develop a WordPerfect version for Windows 95 only to pull the plug so Microsoft could gain market share with its own product.
Microsoft filed a court notice Monday saying it will ask a federal judge to dismiss the $1 billion case for good.
