VERNAL, Utah (AP) - A former eastern Utah police chief faces a criminal defamation charge after prosecutors say he posted offensive comments about other law enforcement officers online using another chief's name.
Court records show Steven C. Guibord is set for arraignment on the misdemeanor Feb. 23 in Vernal's Uintah County Justice Court.
If convicted, the 56-year-old faces a six month jail sentence.
Guibord was Naples police chief for 15 years.
The Deseret News reports Guibord used the current chief's name to post insults about two Border Patrol agents killed in Gila Bend, Ariz., in May.
Investigators say they tracked an IP address to a laptop issued to Guibord by a security company he worked for in Afghanistan.
Court records list no defense attorney and a telephone number listed for Guibord was disconnected.
