SARATOGA SPRINGS, Utah (ABC 4 News) - A Utah County teen surprised a few students on Tuesday when he showed off his loaded gun at school.
"The student had the gun on his person, and when another student saw this, he immediately notified the school resources officer," Alpine School District Spokesperson Rhonda Bromley told ABC4 news and went on to say, "He said he was showing off, and was trying to look cool."
Bromley tells us within minutes the situation was dealt with and the 17-year-old gunman was arrested. However, some parents ABC4 spoke with on Wednesday, more than 24 hours after the incident, were outraged. But the parents weren't necessarily angry at the student; they were upset with the school district for not informing them of the situation.
"It's scary and my daughter goes to school there," one mom told our cameras, and continued, " I didn't get an email, call, text or fax...and I should have."
District Spokesman Rhonda Bromley admits it was up to the principal to inform parents, and he made the decision not to, " the situation was dealt with quickly and he made the decision, should we have told parents...that's something that will be discussed."
Bromley says they're now thinking about making a system-wide notification policy, and this situation, she says, will be learned from.
The 17-year-old boy is currently suspended and facing criminal charges.
