SOUTH SALT LAKE (ABC 4 News) - ABC 4 is taking action to keep cats at a local shelter from being euthanized.
At the South Salt Lake Animal Shelter, they've taken in way too many cats and if more families don't come forward to adopt them, those who work there say that there really is no where else for them to go.
The South Salt Lake Animal Shelter is dealing with dozens and dozens of kittens.
“We are getting in anywhere from 2 to 10 cats a day,” said Debbie Pedersen, an officer at the South Salt Lake Animal Shelter.
The shelter only has room to cage 35 cats but right now, they have taken in more than 60 stray cats and kittens.
“Demand seems to be really low,” Pedersen said, “we've had two adoptions in the last 3 weeks, that’s all we've had.”
If more local families don't come forward to adopt, then these animal lovers will begin fearing the alternative.
“We have them, we get attached to them, they come up and purr to us,” Pedersen said, “When we have to put them down, it's emotionally hard on us”
They say it's unnecessary, especially when cats make great pets.
“Cats can be home with you cuddling, (and) when you leave, cats are more self sufficient,” Pedersen claimed
The South Salt Lake Animal Shelter has plenty of cats to give, and to adopt one can cost you as little as $23 if the cat has already been fixed. If not, it will cost you $63 to spay or neuter it, but you also get a microchip put in the cat, and all of its shots will be taken care of. You'll also leave with a 5-pound bag of food.
