TAYLORSVILLE, Utah (ABC 4 News) – ABC 4 is taking action to help a Taylorsville neighborhood put the brakes on speeders. Parents claim it's gotten so bad their kids can't play outside. So we're sending Brian Carlson and the Speed Zapper to help them fight back.

Mandy Bowen said speeders on her street on Quailstone Drive are putting kids in danger.

“A lot of us won't even let our children play in the front yard,” said Mandy Bowen, Taylorsville resident.

The closest thing is letting her daughter put out a small neon sign at end of the driveway. The bright color, and child shape design is meant to slow speeders down, but so far it's not working.

"It's just progressively getting worse,” said Bowen.

If this little guy can't get it done, maybe the Speed Zapper can. We teamed up with Taylorsville police to stop drivers clueless of what they were doing -

“So why were you speeding?” Reporter Brian Carlson asked a speeder.

“I was completely unconscious of how fast I was going,” said the speeder.

- And those who claim they didn't know the speed limit was 25 mph.

“Do you live here?” Carlson asked a second speeder.

“I do,” the speeder said.

“Do you think you should know the speed limit?” Carlson asked.

“It's probably my responsibility,” he said.

We told this man, parents are worried that his speeding is putting their kids at risk. This was his reply:

“How do I know they don't do this same thing down this very road? How do I know you don't do the same thing down this very road?” the speeder said.

“That's true you never know, but does that excuse your behavior?” Carlson replied.

“No, I'm not making an excuse, I'm saying it's just the way life is,” the speeder said.

With that type of attitude our worried mom isn't leaving her daughter's safety in driver’s hands. Bowen is putting a petition together to get the city to make a better long term solution like installing removable speed bumps, or electronic speed monitoring signs.

“We can't expect a Taylorsville officer to sit out here 24 hours a day 7 days a week, and that's what it's going to take,” Bowen said.

If you need Brian to zap speeders in your neighborhood, let Brian know about it. Just go to the Speed Zapper section of abc4.com. Tell him about the problem. And he’ll zap ‘em.

Each City is different on how they allocate their resources. Taylorsville is limited on how many officers they can put on situations like this. They have been awesome since we got this started. But unfortunately, There are just not enough officers to go around. We have talked to a number of residents that have lived on the street for 20+ years and they said that it has always been bad. But that now it's getting even worse. I can sit in my living room and hear cars speeding down the road. Exceeding 40 mph on a residential street is insane. It's only a matter of time before a kid pays the price. We are going to petition the City to install some sort of traffic calming device such as Speed bumps, or radar type speed signs. Personally I would love to have them install a drainage gutter across the street right in front of my house so that I can sit on my porch and watch the speeders take out their Oil pans and bumpers. I'm not kidding you, some of them have it floored all the way down the street. I would love to see them screw up their car.

“We can't expect a Taylorsville officer to sit out here 24 hours a day 7 days a week, and that's what it's going to take,” in southern Utah in a small town they have a patrol car in sight with a dummy in the car and it slows people down like you can not believe; then every now and then there will be a live person doing radar.....you can not stop speeders its the circle of life I think everyone speeds (if you say you don't then you are lying to yourself) at least do the speed limits on the roads (like off the freeway, hwy) you will be surprised on how much gas you save and how many more lights you hit green; I admit I do about 72-75 on the freeway but so does everyone else; they just need to take away the speed limit and put a max speed limit. But on regular roads I do the speed limit and I save gas, brakes and I get to my destination sometimes faster because I hit more lights green and I always pass the people at every light that were speeding; I figure why speed on the roads? Your risking a speeding ticket, getting into an accident all for what? To get there 2 min. early? (If you get pulled over or into an accident then your late) I usually get to my destination about the same time if not earlier
