TAYLORSVILLE, Utah (ABC 4 News) – ABC 4 is taking action to help a Taylorsville neighborhood put the brakes on speeders. Parents claim it's gotten so bad their kids can't play outside. So we're sending Brian Carlson and the Speed Zapper to help them fight back.
Mandy Bowen said speeders on her street on Quailstone Drive are putting kids in danger.
“A lot of us won't even let our children play in the front yard,” said Mandy Bowen, Taylorsville resident.
The closest thing is letting her daughter put out a small neon sign at end of the driveway. The bright color, and child shape design is meant to slow speeders down, but so far it's not working.
"It's just progressively getting worse,” said Bowen.
If this little guy can't get it done, maybe the Speed Zapper can. We teamed up with Taylorsville police to stop drivers clueless of what they were doing -
“So why were you speeding?” Reporter Brian Carlson asked a speeder.
“I was completely unconscious of how fast I was going,” said the speeder.
- And those who claim they didn't know the speed limit was 25 mph.
“Do you live here?” Carlson asked a second speeder.
“I do,” the speeder said.
“Do you think you should know the speed limit?” Carlson asked.
“It's probably my responsibility,” he said.
We told this man, parents are worried that his speeding is putting their kids at risk. This was his reply:
“How do I know they don't do this same thing down this very road? How do I know you don't do the same thing down this very road?” the speeder said.
“That's true you never know, but does that excuse your behavior?” Carlson replied.
“No, I'm not making an excuse, I'm saying it's just the way life is,” the speeder said.
With that type of attitude our worried mom isn't leaving her daughter's safety in driver’s hands. Bowen is putting a petition together to get the city to make a better long term solution like installing removable speed bumps, or electronic speed monitoring signs.
“We can't expect a Taylorsville officer to sit out here 24 hours a day 7 days a week, and that's what it's going to take,” Bowen said.
If you need Brian to zap speeders in your neighborhood, let Brian know about it. Just go to the Speed Zapper section of abc4.com. Tell him about the problem. And he’ll zap ‘em.
