SALT LAKE CITY (ABC 4 News) - A Salt Lake teen spent Sunday night in the hospital after eating a capsule filled with green powder. She bit into the pill while eating trail mix. ABC4 is taking action to make sure no one else eats these capsules.
We still do not know what was inside the capsules, but the trail mix is no longer available inside Whole Foods. The Salt Lake City family bought the trail mix last week, as she was finishing off the last of her food she tasted something bitter.
Her mother told ABC4, “We didn't know what she ingested, so we were frantic to get her to the hospital."
The Salt Lake City mother did not want to reveal her identity, but wants to warn everyone: be careful what you are eating. Her daughter was eating a bag of trail mix when she found something more than seeds and fruit.
The mother told ABC 4, "As she was getting close to finishing that hand full of trial mix she realized she had plastic in her mouth - she pulled out one capsule that was empty, she had swallowed what was inside and spit out everything else."
They hurried to the hospital not knowing what they had found inside this bag. The teenage girl will be fine, but Sunday night they were not sure.
The mother continued, “She had some numbness on both sides of her face - and down her neck and into her shoulders last night a little bit of burning in her stomach.”
Whole Foods says this is an isolated incident. The company who makes the trail mix, “Enjoy Life” is investigating. They tell ABC4 their production line for their “not nuts” trail mix is no where near anything involving capsules. They believe, this was most likely intentional tampering.
The exact flavor of trail mix in question “beach bash” has been taking off Whole Food’s shelves. It will not be available until they know exactly what was found inside the bag. Salt Lake Police say the investigation will take at least a week.
