KEARNS, Utah (ABC 4 News) – It’s been two weeks now since two Kearns kids were hit by an SUV 4715 South. Salt Lake County is taking action. They began a road safety audit Wednesday afternoon to review the hazards of the busy road.

Wednesday's meeting was a small one with officials from the city, county, fire and police departments. They are part of the road safety audit for 4715 South, the busy road where Stephen and Tasha Pio were hit by an SUV two weeks ago.

The group reviewed the accident history of the area then took action and hit the pavement to review problem areas and potential hazards. Leon Berrett with Salt Lake County Public Works says, “Really just brainstorm any safety concerns we might see whether it might be lack of lighting, storm drain issues, the road falling apart, signal lights, anything that could be causing safety concerns.”

Berrett says 47th South has been on the county's radar. He says it’s a hazardous road they've had on their list for an audit. It's now their top priority. Berrett says, “We haven't had any real complaints about pedestrians getting across so that's something we're looking at in a different way now because of the two kids that got hit.”

A full report with short, medium, and long term goals for 47th South will be released Friday. Berrett says the county is looking into putting a crosswalk where the Pio children were hit, but wants to do that when they can also incorporate flashing lights to add additional safety at that intersection.

i beleve that it is time that the teams start geting out in to the field more and spend less time in the office. it takes people ggetting hit or killed befor someone cares. there are ways to meter traffic that can be used to see about traffic flow. but it takes eyes to take time to look. that is what taxes are paid for. i have lived here for going on 8 years and have seen more people get hit that were i lived all my life. cares vers people to many times the triver here in the area get in to drive and drive like hell. so what i am saying is to just slow down.and for people to look around for kids bikes and other cars. donot leve all up to guv. you need both sides to do it right.

It's so sad that it took kids getting hurt for a road that was already "on the radar" for an audit.
