Interstingly enough, a properly run landfill is not necessarily a bad place for the TVs to end up. We don't want TVs or electronics going into a landfil becuase of the "potentially" hazardous material releases that could happen, but because there is a large quantity of recyclable materials that should not be landfilled because they can be recycled, NOT because they are potentially hasardous. What's worse though. These devices risk being pickedup by an unscrupulous E-Waste Recycler who will likely sell them to another "recycler" who will sell them to someone who exports them to a developing country, where what will happen is a much greater environmental disaster/hazard than if these items were actually left in a landfill. It's not just the lead in the funnel of the CRT that needs to be recycled properly at a lead smelter, but the assurance that when the remaining materials are "reduced" for ultimate smelting, refining and recycling practices that the methods used are clean, and meet the standards we have here in the US, California and other states that do not allow improper treatment. Sadly, these 9 devices may end up being sold, generating revenue for WM, and then end up where they shouldn't.
