OGDEN UTAH (ABC4 News) - Residents have counted too many accidents involving cars and pedestrians and want help.
They have watched adults and children take a chance every time they cross 650 North at Washington Boulevard.
"It's very dangerous and I know," said Vincent Piersantani.
Piersantani who is confined to a wheelchair from a previous accident was struck last week by a car while crossing the street.
He said the nearest intersection where there is a crosswalk and traffic light is about a half mile in both directions.
The intersection which has no crosswalks or traffic lights is the logical choice for many who live in the neighborhood.
"I was crossing and the car hit me and I flew about twenty feet," he said. " I was pretty lucky that I didn't break any bones just some bruises on my hip."
But Shad Hoganson's family wasn't as lucky. Two years ago his wife was killed while trying to cross.
"No one seems to care and fix that intersection," he said.
Ogden city officials said the problem is UDOT'S.
But when ABC4 NEWS contacted a spokesman for the state's transportation department he said Ogden city needs to request help.
"They need to send us a letter with data requesting we study that intersection," said Vic Saunders. "Once that happens we can start counting pedestrians and cars and look at past data."
ABC4 NEWS then contacted the city's engineer who was unaware that the city needed to submit a request.
"We want to make our city safe," said Justin Anderson. "And if that's what it takes we'll do it. I plan to send them a letter by Monday at the latest.'
