Salt Lake City (ABC 4 News) This Halloween a lot of people will be dressing up as Mormons. In fact, being a Mormon missionary for Halloween made Time magazine's top ten topical costume list. The magazine says its a great way to tap into the 2011 Mormon phenomenon.
Plus, the editors say its easy to do. The magazine even provides a checklist: White shirt, Necktie, Name tag, Book of Mormon, Slacks and Bike helmet (which is optional).

However, not everyone likes the idea of a missionary costume. Sue Perdue said, "It would be like dressing up as a Muslim - I think it would be in bad taste." Sam Hugo said, "I think it is totally disrespectful - I think its making fun." Carol DeBoer-Langworthy said, "It seems a little disrespectful to me." About half the people we spoke to at temple square in Salt Lake City took offense to missionary costumes - which came in at number six in the Time magazine article - behind costumes for a pregnant Beyonce, Rebecca Black and Muammar Gaddafi.

But there were plenty of people - including many who are LDS - who didn't seem to mind. Brandon Sara said "If somebody is trying to ridicule they are trying to offend, but if they're not trying to do that - if it is good and clean then fine by me." And Stephanie Sala said, "I don't think it is any different than someone being a nun or a priest for halloween. People have fun doing that so I don't see any big difference." Of course, while it may be hot this year - the costume isn't new - all over the internet you can find pictures of people who have gone to parties as Mormon missionaries. Sala adds, "You are going as something you are not - I would assume a missionary is probably not a missionary. So, someone who thinks its fun to be one for halloween more power to them." And again - its a costume that is much easier to put together than say, something like the angel Moroni.

I didn't know where else to comment but today November 18th 2011 you featured a story about the Church of Jesus Christ of Latter Day Saints "campaign" with the catch phrase "I'm a mormon" I had no problem with the story itself, but you highlighted featured video's in the "I'm a Mormon" campaign, and inadvertently included an anti-mormon video in the feature. titled "My name is Emily Pearson and I'm an Ex Mormon." Which can be located on Facebook. Ex-mormon, and mormon are not the same thing, and in this particular case they are definitely not "campaigning" for the same cause. Just thought I would let you know to double check your video's before stating what they represent.

My top costume would be Lucifer from The Book of Mormon musical's Act II show-stopper "Spooky Mormon Hell Dream". but three kids as young Elder Price, his brother Jack and a glazed donut would be hilarious!! http://www.bookofmormondenvercountdown.com/

Let's post pictures of temple garments, especially the men's Pillsbury Dough-Boy hat & fake fig-leaf crotch-covering. I'm sure it will quickly become the latest rage in costumes ;)

@Mngfer You sir, are a nut. The most I see anyone using the BoM for is as an expensive source of toilet paper.

I'm not for it. I saw two guys dressed up as missionaries and they were drunk out of their tree and making cat calls to women walking by. I thought they were real missionaries at first until I saw them behaving this way. Then I realized it was a week away from Halloween. Guess they couldn't wait to get out and make asses of themselves.

I'm LDS myself and I love the idea! Let me tell you why. The article says the magazine provides a checklist of necessary items for the costume. And one of items is the very Book of Mormon!! Imagine all those thousands of people who have to get a copy of the very Book of Mormon for their costume!!! What if just one of them gets to read the book and feels the Spirit?! Wouldn't it be worthy?! Let'em dress up and get that copy of the BofM. No offense at all!
