LOGAN (ABC 4 News) - The Logan Police Department is asking the community to dig into their pockets a little to help them fight crime -- with the purchase of a new K-9 service dog.
Currently, the city has two service dogs to aid in the capture of criminal suspects and detect illegal drugs. However, as the only Cache Valley agency with a K-9 unit, Logan Police say adding another dog would greatly impact their crime fighting efforts. Logan Police often assist other law enforcement agencies in the area, officials said.
Between 2011 and 2012, the Logan K-9 unit has been called into service more than 300 times, officials said.
However, acquiring a highly-trained service dog isn't cheap. In fact, most cost between $15,000-$20,000 because the animals must be specially trained and handled by canine professionals in order to become effective K-9 helpers.
K-9 dogs help the community in many ways, such as searching buildings for contraband and hidden suspects, sniffing our illegal narcotics, chasing fleeing suspects, crowd control, and protection of police officers.
To achieve this goal, Logan authorities are asking the community to donate to the cause. Residents can contribute to this fundraiser by contacting the Logan Police Department at (435) 716-9300.
