Utah volunteers mugged in Dominican Republic

SANTO DOMINGO, Dominican Republic (ABC 4 News) - A group of volunteer doctors, dentists and assistants from Utah were held at gunpoint in the Dominican Republic as they were forced to hand over their valuables and cash.

Puerto Rico, Jamaica and Haiti are 50 times more dangerous. You were in a bad neighborhood in the dark with an expensive camera and watch. Use common sense, it has nothing to do with a "third world country". You do that in New York, Chicago, Los Angeles or any other first world country in the richest country in the world and the same thing could have happened. Also, I know you mean to do the right thing but we don't your help. It is safe for tourists, but use common anywhere you go, rich or poor country, it doesn't matter.

Being robbed is terrible, but who is foolish enough to wear a $3,000 wristwatch to a 3rd world country that everyone knows is rife with street crime? $3,000 is probably more than many DR citizens make in a year's time...
