SALT LAKE CITY (ABC 4 News) - Utah lawmakers passed HB 83 that would increase the speed limit from 75 to 80-miles-per-hour on I-15 from Brigham City to Idaho, on I-80 from Wendover to Grantsville and on I-84 from Tremonton to Idaho.

The speed limit on many Utah interstates today 80-mile-per-hour stretches along southbound I-15.

State Senator Scot Jenkins says Utah Department of Transportation studies reveal faster speed limits in these areas keep more slow drivers in the right lane and fast drivers in the left lane resulting in fewer collisions and crashes.

Jenkins says he used this study to convince lawmakers to pass HB 83.

The bill is on its way to Governor Gary Herbert's office. It will become law in May if he signs it into law.
