SALT LAKE CITY (AP) - A proposal presented to lawmakers would give parents the choice between two sex education classes for their children.

One class would be abstinence-based and would also offer information about issues like sexually transmitted diseases. The other would emphasize abstinence and offer facts about STD prevention but also would provide information about contraceptive options.

Melissa Bird, executive director of Planned Parenthood Action Council, says the proposed legislation addresses the needs of all parents.

But the Eagle Forum opposes the bill, calling it inappropriate and unnecessary.

Rep. Lynn Hemingway, D-Salt Lake City, presented his proposal to a legislative interim committee on Wednesday. More hearings on the proposal are planned.

To people who refuse to accept responsibility for their actions and think everyone owes them something, saying "No" and abstaining is not an option. Your version of reality is very naive. Are you saying to tell these irresponsible kids that it is okay to be stupid and make us pay their bills? Now, who has lost reality? Many, not all, Young people, as has been proven many times, are not capable of making an intelligent decision. Neither Parents nor the community should have to pay for kids stupidity. Let them pay their own bill and take full responsibility for their own actions. Possibly, some common sense MIGHT be used. The idiot logic of Living for the minute has cause too much heart ache and financially destroyed parents. Saying No is an option to every responsible, intelligent young person. Wives seem to be very good at saying NO, why can't the kids?

Here is a first, parents actually having a say in what their kids are taught! Given the intelligence displayed by young people, they aren't capable of thinking responsible. However, it is the parents responsibility to teach their kids and decide their education. If the parents choose to have the full sex education taught, then that should be their right to make that choice. I can support that. However, since we, as citizens are going to have to pay for any acts of Poor judgment, we must have a law that insures no public money will be spent for any care of the mother or the baby. It is not our responsibility to pay for someones act of stupidity. When That law is in place, then teach anything the parents want their kids to learn. Just don't punish the rest of us for the kids actions! Keep our tax dollars on important things. The churches can take care of the poor choices and their liabilities.

Stay with reality. Just say no is not natural, or in practicing abstinence. Thank you, Robert Evan Howard aclepd.com aclepd@aclepd.com
