CACHE COUNTY, Utah (ABC 4 News) - A 22-year-old man died Saturday after drowning in the Blacksmith Fork River in Cache County.
Police confirmed that 22-year-old Gregory Gray from North Ogden and his sister, who's name has not been released, were fishing on the Blacksmith Fork river when they tried to cross the water near an old spillway.
Police say that Gray's sister slipped and that's when Gregory tried to pull her back out of the water. The sister let go and was swept down the river.
According to authorities, she was able to get out of the water a ways down. When she got out, she couldn't find her brother.
Police said Gray was eventually found this afternoon about 0.75 miles from where he and his sister had fallen.
According to rescuers, Gray was deceased when they pulled him from the water. Gray's sister is reportedly in good condition.
The accident happened two miles from the mouth of Logan canyon.
This is the sixteenth drowning death to occur in a Utah river or lake since April.
In addition to today's drowning death, there was also a near drowning in Box Elder County at a campground near the town of Fielding. A 19-year old man was swimming in a canal when he got swept away by the current.
The man was with a group of friends who were able to pull him out of the water and perform CPR.
The man was responded immediately to CPR and was able to walk into an ambulance before he was transported to Bear River Hospital. He is expected to make a full recovery.
Rescue workers want to stress the point that these rivers and lakes in Utah are still running fast, high and cold from the spring runoff, and that people need to use extra caution around them.
