SALT LAKE CITY (AP) - A retired Salt Lake City police officer is in critical condition after a boat explosion and fire at Lake Powell.

University of Utah Hospital spokeswoman Marissa Villaseñor says Bruce Maxwell is being treated for burns. She says his family isn't releasing any more information.

The National Park Service says the 63-year-old man was trying to start the engine after fueling up when the 30-foot cabin motor cruiser exploded in flames Thursday.

Maxwell crawled out of the boat and onto the dock at the Antelope Point fueling station, where others came to his aid. The cabin cruiser was destroyed.

Coconino County sheriff's deputies weren't immediately available Friday to update their investigation into the explosion.

Sounds like he didn't run the blower first. Gas fumes in the engine compartment is not a good thing.
