SALT LAKE CITY (ABC 4 News) - We're taking an inside look at your rights if you've ever towed.
On Friday, we told you about a woman who was towed even though she says she was parked legally and had a permit. ABC 4 asked Heritage Towing a few questions and Jessie Du Pre got her car back free of charge.
A Heritage Tow operator took Jessie's car even though she says her parking permit was visible from her rear view mirror. Bachman allowed ABC 4 into the impound lot to check the permit. It was clearly visible.
"Then you get the car back. Apparently one of my guys is an idiot," said General Manager for Heritage Towing, Arnold Bachman.
"I have no idea how they could have towed it with the pass right in front," said Jessie Du Pre.
Heritage Towing General Manager Arnold Bachman was honest when we asked him questions. "If we're in error we're in error and I give it back that's the way it should be," said Bachman.
Next, the driver said he took her car because she was parked in a no parking area. Jessie denies these allegations.
We turned to our viewers on Facebook asking, "Have you been a victim of unfair towing?" Don Wright wrote, "Tow companies are as crooked as our Government and the Courts!!!" Rachel Graham wrote, "Not me, but I knew a lot of people that were booted unfairly in Provo."
We sat down to talk with the "tow company police if you will"
Adam Anderson works for UDOT he oversees complaints against tow companies.
"If your car is hooked up, but he hasn't left the scene yet and your there. He has to release it with 50 percent of the tow fee," Anderson said. He says about 90 people filed complaints against tow companies in Utah last year. He says most rulings are in favor of the tow companies.
However as we found out from time to time the tow company gets it wrong. "Then you get the car back. You get the car back. Apparently one of my guys in an idiot," said Bachman.
