MOAB, Utah (ABC 4 News) – The clean up of uranium tailings near Moab reached a milestone this week.
On Wednesday, a train left Moab carrying the one millionth ton of the tailings.
The tailings are being moved from near the Colorado River to the disposal site in Crescent Junction, 33-miles away.
The cleanup began last April, but it's estimated it will take nearly a decade to get all 16 million tons of the tailings moved and properly disposed of.
The tailings are leftovers from a former uranium milling facility three miles northwest of Moab.
