CACHE COUNTY - (ABC 4 News) Severe flooding is causing major problems Wednesday morning for people in Cache County. Tuesday night heavy rain in Smithfield caused water in a canal to spill over into people's homes.  Cache County officials say teams worked late into the night to keep the water out of people's homes.

Officials said several canals in Northern Utah were overflowing Tuesday night and flooding into basements and homes. One particular neighborhood along the 300 East block of Smithfield was hit hard by the storm.

Residents there said many homes in the neighborhood were flooded as a result of a canal overflowing. Emergency responders said basements quickly filled with water, with at least one basement of a home near the Smithfield Canal becoming completely flooded to ceiling. Water destroyed so much of the house, the people living there can't even begin to estimate how much money they've lost.

"I wouldn't even want to guess because I imagine everything, the whole basement, is going to have to be completely redone," said Greg Despain, Smithfield resident.

What's worse for Despain is he doesn't have any flood insurance, that means everything that needs to be fixed he may have to pay for himself.

Meanwhile, crews on hand used heavy machinery to help reduce flood waters spilling over from the banks of the canal.

ABC 4 is told the waters are beginning to recede.

I live in the townhouses on the northend of Smithfield, and our retention area rivals that of the Great Salt Lake. God be with those who got hurt, i know some did. wow good job weather service, there was a thunderstorm watch for Box Elder County on the news yesterday, but nothing for Cache County.

I live in the 300 south block, I am a house up from the canal and my basement still flooded. My sweet neighbors down from the canal had their entire basement flood to the celing, windows break and all. We have been hauling things out, but it is almost a total loss. So many good friends and neighbors came to assist and bag. There are still many including firefighters and disaster rescue teams assisting at this moment.

this is sad! hopefully there homes will be okay and get pumped out quickly. The water damage will be terrible. God bless these people and those helping them. Why was the canal running that high? As one who has ran a canal system, I would have thought that canal would have been cut back due to serious storms in the forecast. Maybe the water order was high enough that it couldn't be cut back?
