Trial resumes in boat crash that killed scientist

OGDEN, Utah (AP) - A trial has resumed for the owner of a powerboat that killed a swimmer at an Ogden-area reservoir last year.

Lawyers for Skyler Shepherd are putting on his defense Thursday after prosecutors had their turn in Ogden's 2nd District Court earlier this week.

The lawyers said in opening statements that the 22-year-old Shepherd wasn't driving when the boat hit University of Utah scientist Esther Fujimoto on Pineview Reservoir.

Two other men face a separate trial in February. All three face charges of failing to render aid, reckless endangerment and obstructing justice.

Shepard took the wheel to circle back and says the woman appeared irritated but uninjured, so he took off.

State Medical Examiner Todd Grey testified Fujimoto was bleeding to death after the boat's propeller sliced into her legs.
