TACOMA, Wash. (AP) - Lawyers for the father-in-law of missing Utah woman Susan Powell have filed a notice of appeal in his Washington state voyeurism case.

Steven Powell was sentenced Friday to 2 1/2 years in prison for recording images of two neighbor girls in their bathroom.

Lawyer Mark Quigley says the defense team filed notice Friday in Superior Court.

Eventual grounds for appeal will be decided by an appellate lawyer. However, Quigley says he thinks the strongest argument concerns the legality of the search of Powell's home. He also contends Powell's sentence was exceptional.

Susan Powell disappeared from her West Valley City, Utah, home in 2009. Steven Powell's son Josh Powell was the prime suspect in her disappearance. Josh Powell killed himself and his two young sons in a February fire.

Steven Powell was arrested after investigators searching his home for evidence in Susan Powell's disappearance came across computer disks with what they described as thousands of images of women and girls who seemed unaware they were being photographed.
