Spooked elks fall to deaths on highway

PROVO CANYON, Utah County (ABC 4 News) - Marchelle Elmer and her husband were just coming back from a day of photographing wildlife around Cascade Springs, when they came upon a herd of 15-to-20 elk walking down the westbound lanes of Highway 189 in Provo Canyon. The elk were just a mile east of the turnoff for the Sundance Ski Resort along a section where the highway is split – the westbound lanes are elevated about 50-feet above the eastbound lanes.

The DWR Officer just like anyother Police Officer has to refer the charges to the County Attorney responsible for the County that the incident occured in. If the Attorney will not prosecute the case the officer is wasteing time investigating it. I hope Utah County has a Prosecuteing Attorney with scrupples, and the individual responsible this terrible waste will be required to pay the debt to all of us, who incidently own the ELK!

What a joke, my brother is facing serious charges and had his gun confinscated because someone "said" he poached a elk...(untrue) but my point is this man clearly with no doubt caused the death of these animals and should face the same consequences for EACH animal. Tens of thousands in fines, confinscation of vehicle, etc.....and a little public humiliation wouldn't hurt either...

I think this person needs to face some charges for what he or she has done. This could have been a child. What gives some people the right away on the road. When others are stopped or slowed done they have done for some reason and all others should do the same

The idiot SUV driver should harshly fined and given community service involving wildlife. But here in Utah I am sure this will be brushed under the rug. Hunting is an nearly an industry here and if we wouldn't want to bring ethics into question about killing wildlife.

At the very least can't DWR hit them with harrassment and wanton waste? I'd push for 7 counts, one for each of the elk they caused to die, plus a count for the remainder of the herd. Why turn it over to the county?
