Sex education bill makes it through Senate Education Committee

SALT LAKE CITY (ABC4 News) - A bill to help parents teach their kids about sex at home won committee approval on Monday.

The vote in favor of the SB39 came after more than an hour of discussion including students.

Davis County 8th Grader Kate Robertson was one of a handful of students who spoke to the committee.

Robertson said, "I've been to these classes and I've not had good experiences and I do not support them."

She told the committee she wanted to learn about sex education at home. She wants a choice and resources her family could use.

The Senate Education Committee voted 4-2 on Monday to advance SB39 to the Senate floor. The bill would require the state school board to develop and offer optional, online training to parents on how to educate their kids about sex. The bill would not change how sex education is taught in schools.

Bill sponsor Sen. Stuart Reid, R-Ogden, said schools have an important role when it comes to teaching kids about sex, "but there's also a role for the parents."
