SALT LAKE CITY (ABC 4 News) - For the next few weeks, Salt Lake City will be having a grand old time.
Literally.
Ten pianos will spread out across downtown Salt Lake – free for anyone to play.
It's all part of a new exhibit by the Utah Museum of Contemporary Art.
“Play me, I’m yours.”
This is the name of this exhibit.
It's been all over the world and now it's playing in Utah's capitol.
Luke Jerram, the artist who came up with the idea, says,
“It provides this huge empty space, this big blank canvas - almost like Facebook or YouTube - for people to express themselves and to connect.
Jerram got the idea for “Play me, I’m yours" in a laundromat.
This after he wondered why people there weren't communicating with each other.
Now, this piano man has taken his idea to dozens of cities around the world, reaching some two million people.
In Salt Lake, the ten "play me" pianos were all painted by local artists.
Adam Price, the museum’s executive director, says,
"The important thing about this is that it's a chance for the public to express
their own creativity."
And, in Australia, this idea led to a very romantic duet.
A couple met at one of the pianos and will soon be married.
As a matter of fact, it was a couple of journalists.
