SALT LAKE CITY (AP) - Former Olympians have relit the Olympic cauldron at the University of Utah to celebrate the 10th anniversary of the 2002 Winter Games.
Hundreds gathered to watch as the flame took a few minutes to catch on Wednesday night. The cauldron stayed lit for a few minutes, but spotlights will shoot a beam into the night sky for the next 17 days.
Gov. Gary Herbert asked a cheering crowd whether Salt Lake City should host again in 2022.
The lighting kicks off a series of anniversary events. GOP presidential candidate Mitt Romney will make an appearance Feb. 18 at an ice skating show at EnergySolutions Arena.
Romney was head of the Salt Lake Olympic Committee.
Team USA garnered 34 medals in the 2002 games, breaking the previous record of 13.
