SALT LAKE CITY (ABC 4 News) - Identity theft is exploding across the country and some of Utah's youngest people are at risk.
In a press conference today, Utah leaders urged parents to take action and monitor their children's credit.
That's because identity thieves are now targeting children, knowing they won't get caught until the children become young adults. But a new House bill is meant to help those young victims.
"To know that it's getting all cleared up its really nice," said Brooklyn Roush, a victim of child identity theft. "When I get my identity cleared up I can get a car or a house or something."
"A person that has been a victim of identity fraud can now go sue for damages that have occurred to them," said Utah Representative Julie Fisher.
HB 387 is meant to expand the Attorney General's identity theft reporting website.
On the site, parents can check their children's credit and even lock it until they're 18. Here's the link.
