SALT LAKE CITY (ABC 4 News) - Changes are flowing into Utah's DABC stores to keep alcohol away from kids.
Newly painted parking stalls can now be found at 35 DABC outlets, many on the Wasatch Front.
ABC 4 News is told they were paid for with a $10,000 dollar federal grant.
They are a red colored reminder that underage drinking is against the law.
We ran into Dr. Gary Hedlund in the parking lot at the state’s new wine store.
He likes what he sees,
"I am a physician at Primary Children's Hospital and I see the effects of alcohol on teens and the tragedy that can bring."
So, now, when you buy booze, placed in the parking lot and captured though cardboard kids in the stores, there will be constant reminders that alcohol is not for everyone.
Also new are giant cut-out like bottles in the DABC stores.
They also aim to prevent drinking by minors.
Finally, on the floor, there will be new graphic designs of broken bottles.
The bits of broken glass form the face of an unhappy child.
The label on the broken bottle says,
“Underage drinking shatters a kid’s future.”
But this leads to a key question – will all these new additions work?
While everyone we talked to at the wine store liked the "minor" changes,
it remains to be seen how effective they will be.
Still, most thought it was worth a shot to keep shots away from kids.
These new changes will officially be unveiled by the state Friday.
