SALT LAKE CITY (ABC 4 News) - National Rifle Association Executive Vice President Wayne LaPierre told 1,200 people in the Salt Palace Saturday night the Second Amendment is facing its greatest threat in the history of the United States.

LaPierre suggested the gun debate is over whether the Federal Government or U.S. citizens should have more power.  LaPierre suggests U.S. citizens should have more power and stated President Obama is using the Sandy Hook Elementary shootings to veer away from the Constitution.

He says the proposed national gun registry is the first step for the Federal Government to control all guns.  He suggests the Government could use it to confiscate guns if another mass shooting occurs.  He also questions the Federal Government's ability to prevent criminals from gaining access to this list.

LaPierre is asking citizens to express their thoughts about gun rights with lawmakers.

President Obama said he would be demonized at a news conference where he pushed for a ban on assault type weapons and universal background checks.

Mr. Obama says his support for regulating gun control is reasonsable.  He says if his actions save just one life then it will be worth the effort.
