SALT LAKE CITY (ABC 4 News) – Utahns have mixed reaction to a newly released video from the National Rifle Association that attacks the President.
The video calls President Obama “another elitist hypocrite which it comes to a fair share of security”.
The attack comes after the President opposed the NRA’s suggestion to combat gun violence with having an armed guard at every school. “Are the president's kids more important that yours? Then why is he skeptical about putting armed security in our schools when his kids are protected by armed guards at their schools?” the video asks.
The white house called the ad "repugnant and cowardly". The NRA released the video the day before Pres. Obama announced his $500 million plan to reduce gun violence.
ABC 4’s Kim Johnson showed the NRA's video to several people in Utah today. Some agreed with the video and some didn’t think the NRA’s argument had merit.
“I think the video is kind of funny because that's the President's kids and there's a lot more you could do with the President's kids than a normal everyday person,” said Katie-Marie Swager.
Maher Ramaileh agrees. “This is lunatic in my opinion,” he said. “Before he was elected president his kids where not protected in Chicago they were going to school like everybody else’s. They were protected before that's part of our democracy, that's part of our government the president gets protected that's normal.”
But one gun owner we talked to said the NRA's video has a point. Lenny Nelson believes the President needs to abide by the same laws he proposes for the American people.
“It's a double standard everywhere he goes he has people with magazines that hold a lot more than seven rounds that protect him and if need be an assault rifle to back them up,” said Nelson. “Are they going to change the rules for them too?”
