SALT LAKE (ABC 4 News) -  Utah's Attorney General is now urging the LDS Church to come
out in opposition to Arizona's controversial new immigration law.

And Mark Shurtleff also tells ABC 4 News that, unless the LDS Church does so, a similar law is likely to pass here.

Shurtleff is LDS but he makes clear he isn't speaking for the Church.

Still, he's worried about what will happen if the Church doesn't speak out for itself.

Tuesday, ABC 4 asked Shurtleff:

"Are you saying, you want the Church to come out against the Arizona Law?”

To which he responded:

“I think that would help stop an Arizona style law here, if they would definitely come out against the Arizona style law."

When ABC 4 again repeated it as a yes or no question, Shurtleff said,

"I've said that I want to see the LDS Church come out against the Arizona law.”

According to Utah's Attorney General, the LDS Church now has an immigration perception problem.

And it does, he says, because the legislator who sponsored Arizona's new, tough immigration law is LDS.

"I have a lot of friends and associates, the Attorney General of Arizona I speak to all the time, there has been a backlash
against the LDS Church because it was sponsored by Mormons."

Shurtleff also says he hears over and over again from other Mormons about the LDS Twelfth Article of Faith.

It says, “We believe in being subject to kings, presidents, rulers, and magistrates, in obeying, honoring, and sustaining the law.”

Utah's Attorney General also hints that LDS legislators may be among those talking to him about this.

"They consistently get on me saying if I'm not out there rounding up  every illegal alien in the state,
then I'm not obeying my own article of faith."

As for the LDS Church, it has not taken an official position on immigration.

But, in an earlier statement, it did urge compassion when dealing with this issue.

My biggest concern with many illegal Mexican immigrants is their hateful attitude they have for this country. My wife works with many people from Mexico and because she is Latina she gets to hear how many of them truly feel. This does not apply to all but there seems to be quite few people from Mexico that do not like Americans and they feel that this country is theirs, that was taken from them. If we do not enforce immigration laws we will have serious problems.

For those of you who take every opportunity to vent your thinly veiled hatred against latinos, I say you should be ashamed to call yourselves a "true american", a "true christian", "LDS" or a " law abiding citizen" you are "none of the above"...unless you were a native american before the gun-toting european immigrants came to the americas illegaly...your people and their descendants should have to face the same woes you advocate against these people...they take nothing from you and give their all to earn their living and sacrifice much to have a better life for themselves and their families...they are the true americans, the true pioneers...start "walking the walk" and "talking the talk" and find a new hobby to do, that will make your families proud of you.

There is such incredible hate being spewed on this topic. I've read the comments and all what you forget is that all the "law abiding" in the world won't get you into heaven. 1 Corinthians 13:1-2 "Though I speak with the tongues of men and of angels, and have not charity, I am become as sounding brass, or a tinkling cymbal. And though I have the gift of prophecy, and understand all mysteries, and all knowledge; and though I have all faith, so that I could remove mountains, and have not charity, I am nothing." The laws that we should most be concerned about are God's laws. Remember this one? The Pharisees were looking for a reason to persecute the Savior by using their laws to trap him. Matthew 22:36-40 "Master, which is the great commandment in the law? Jesus said unto him, Thou shalt love the Lord thy God with all thy heart, and with all thy soul, and with all thy mind. This is the first and great commandment." And the second is like unto it, Thou shalt love thy neighbour as thyself. On these two commandments hang all the law and the prophets." These "illegals" are our neighbors and our brothers. You would destroy their lives and families for what amounts to trespassing? People are so blinded by their hate, like the Pharisees, that they don't even consider what the Savior would do. Do you really think the Lord cares on what side of a line you stand on His earth? Have you forgotten how he ministered to prostitutes, thieves, and murderers? Have you forgotten that Nephi killed a drunken Laban? Or how Daniel continued to pray to God when the law said that no one in the kingdom would be allowed to pray to anyone but the king? Morality isn't dictated by law. Morality is doing what you know is right even when man's laws tell you otherwise. Try being true followers of Christ.

Mark Shurtleff's website SAYS that he is FOR sustaining and enforcing the laws of the land---I guess his opinion changes depending on WHO he is presently taking to at the time. Looks like Shurtleff is a TRUE politician ABOVE anything else. Shurtleff has been dabbling in Liberation Theology which is an apostate form of religion and is in direct opposition to Christianity. He does this as he is "professing" to have LDS beliefs....but instead he is revealing himself as the politician that he truly is.

freedomoutlaw...you've muddied the water in this discussion. No-one said that IMMIGRANTS can't be hard-working or honest or anything else good. What they are saying is that ILLEGAL IMMIGRANTS aren't being honest. The issue has nothing to do with skin color or fear of "brown skinned" people taking power and control. True immigrants come LEGALLY, learn the language of their new country, obey the laws and participate in this constitutionally founded democratic republic. You sound like a member of a group like "La Raza" who have decided that what they lost in battle and trade should be given back to them because they want it. So silly and illogical. I am a LEGAL IMMIGRANT and I have no fear. I believe that if we say that we as Latter Day Saints "obey, honor, and sustain the laws" then that is what we should do or be willing to bear the consequences of not doing so. As President Monson said...the Church encourages members to what is right and be good citizens. We have been counseled to do good things of our own free will and choice. We are taught correct principles and are learning to govern ourselves. Stop with the race baiting! It isn't part of this discussion...the law is!

Ummm, "nor can you be truly LDS and be an illegal!!! " I am an immigrant and LDS, and know plenty of honest, hard working immigrants, who live the gospel everyday, not just on Sunday. Who do you think you are you to say that? Unbelievable. This whole anti-immigration ruckus is just a symptom of the white man's fear of loosing power and control. Guess what? This nation was built by immigrants, they fact that is now brown skinned immigrants "taking over" your land is what rottens you inside. Mexicans didn't take over your land, they were already here. I wonder if this whole thing would be happening if white immigration would be the case?

Ummm, Mark ole' buddy...the church HAS taken a position on illegal immigration. It is clearly stated in the 12th Article of Faith, D&D 58:21, and other places as well. It has to do with honoring and obeying the law. And you claim to be a lawyer! Shame on you!!!

Has Mr. Shurtleff heard of the seperation of church and state. Being a member of the LDS church, I would be disappointed if the church did come out on this issue taking a stand in either direction. There are already laws in place for immigration that are never enforced anyway hence the term "illegal alien". I would like to see what would happen if our citizens that reside in Mexico would get the same treatment in mexico if they decided to hold a protest over their self pronounced rights. I think the lack of enforcement of laws already in place, is what has gotten us here in the first place. rco1975 wyoming
