PAROWAN, Utah (AP) - The Iron County sheriff's office says a Colorado man died after the glider he was flying fell 2,000 feet into a field shortly after he released it from a tow plane.
Detective Jody Edwards says Michael Packard, 65, of Littleton, Colo., was one of 58 pilots participating in a competition based at the Parowan airport in southern Utah, The Salt Lake Tribune reported on its Web site Tuesday.
In the competition, pilots fly to and from regional landmarks in gliders equipped with GPS chips that record flight times. The fastest pilot wins. The competition ends July 4.
The crash is under investigation.
