HURRICANE, Utah (ABC 4 News) - The Washington County sheriff's office says a man died Tuesday afternoon after being hit with a Taser during an incident with police near Hurricane.

A sheriff spokesperson said the Taser was deployed by a Hurricane City police officer on state Route
59 in southern Utah.

Police used the Taser on the man after they say he became agitated and could not be subdued.

After being hit by the Taser, police say the man lost consciousness.

Paramedics treated 32-year-old Brian Cardall, but he was later pronounced dead at a St. George hospital.

Brian Cardall is the son of KSL-TV's editorial director, Duane Cardall.

Whatever happened, this is another incident that occurred because enough police are not trained in how to handle someone in the throes of mental illness. There is a wonderful program, CIT: http://www.namiut.org/index.php?option=com_content&task=view&id=25, which teach police exactly how. This program should be state- and nation-wide. Until the on-going stigma and fear of the mentally ill is addressed, these kind of incidents will continue. I speak personally about this because I was arrested, and in jail for five days, while in a manic state. I received no medication or help in jail. Everything I suffered then, and after, was only because I "misbehaved"". I am not blaming the police, but surely there were other feasible ways of restraining Paul. I blame for their ignorance, and their unwillingness to learn, and look at their own behaviors. And yes, tazers CAN be deadly.

Very tragic but a possible happy ending. I pray that his brother Paul may receive his brothers heart since he has been on the waiting list for over 200 days. It would help the healing process for both families.

Cops love to hurt people. Killing American citizens seems to be a pastime. In any event, this makes two WEASEL AWARDS won by Utah cops in one day. Thank you, Robert Evan Howard aclepd.com aclepd@aclepd.com
