MIDVALE, Utah (ABC 4 News) – Children at an elementary school on Wednesday morning had the opportunity to talk to astronauts.

Students at Midvalley Elementary spoke to the astronauts on the International Space Station by radio.

The school applied for the program through NASA two years ago and had the high-powered radio equipment installed.

For many students, particularly for 6th grader Nick Fife, it was a very special day.

“It was very nerve wrecking because I was afraid I’d mess up, but to be able to do that it was a once in a lifetime chance and I lived it and it was great,” Fife said.

The NASA program has now allowed kids in about 500 schools around the country to talk to the astronauts in space.
