SALT LAKECITY (ABC 4 News) – Hunters headed up the hills Saturday for the first day of deer hunting.

Around 17,000 people are expected to huntover the nine-day season.

Wildlife experts say deer are going up the mountains because of warmer temperatures in the valleys would make hunters do more to increase their chances to succeed.

“I think hunters are going to need to get off the roads, do some hiking, and really get back in the cover where these deer are hiding, and that will really increase your chance for success.”  said Mark Valley.

The Department of Wildlife reminds people to watch for hikers and others on the rail, and to find out the restrictions in the area they are hunting.
