SALT LAKE CITY (ABC 4 News) - Utah’s unemployment rate hovers near 7-percent. So, how do you stand out to future employers, or keep your current job in this economy?

Author and Utah businessman, Stephen R. Covey says you have to be willing to do something different. “You’ve got to do your research with customers, with suppliers, with business partners and with the associates that you are going to work with.” He says once you have identified the problems in company, then come up with solutions, not a resume.

Covey says,” if you get consensus on the nature of the problem or the nature of the pain that they are in then you write a contribution statement, rather than a resume.” That contribution statement explains how you can contribute to the organization. “You can’t be arrogant, you have to be humble, and modest, but you have to make it evidenced that you have done a lot of research.”

Covey says most people won’t do that. “You have got to think very creatively, outside the job description, through a lot of research, and also present it with humility. That kind of research will blow most employers away, literally, because very few people do it.”

He says the same wisdom holds true for those who already have jobs. “The more you are aware of the competitive forces and the industry, and how you can add value to customers, the more customers you will get, and the more valuable you will become.

Covey says too many employees are not engaged. “They have gone through the motions and they have kept their job for that day, but what is happening in their industry? What’s happening with the competitive forces out there in the market place? He says employees who can answer those questions have job security.

Covey has written a book on the subject entitled: Great Work, Great Career. You can also find the entrepreneur on his new iphone application at http://bit.ly/GreatCareer. It costs $9.99.
